FAQs for the platform/court forms and IHT forms

In this article we will answer some of our most frequently asked questions

I've entered a physical shareholding, why is this not showing on the IHT400?

Depending if the shareholding is listed or not listed on the UK stock exhange will determine how and where it shows on the IHT400.

If you tick 'Yes' to this question found on the asset tile - 'Is quoted on a UK stock exchange?'

This will automatically add this to the IHT411 and then into the IHT400 in box 63

If you tick 'No' to that question you will need to select and generate the IHT412, once you have completed the manual schedule and saved it, this will then map the value from the schedule to the subsequent boxes in the IHT400.

I've entered an investment bond, why is this not showing on my IHT400?

We typically expect investment bonds to be entered into the IHT410 based off the guidance in the schedule.

Simply open the IHT400 and on page 5 select 'yes' to the IHT410 and save. Once you complete the IHT410 and save the information you have added, the value will then show in the relevant field in your IHT400.

I've added a joint property, why is this showing on the IH405 as well?

The guidance in the IHT404 states:

"If the joint assets include houses, land or buildings and interests
in land you will also need to fill in form IHT405, ‘Houses, land,
buildings and interests in land’ to provide a full description of
the land and property."

With the above in mind, we will show joint estate items on the IHT405 for descriptive purposes but will not include the value so as not to double count any values in the IHT400.

Why can I not tick 'No' to question 16 on the C1 "Have you filled in form IHT400 Inheritance Tax account?"?

There is logic built into the platform to recognise if this question needs to be ticked yes or no.

As this is based on completing the IHT400, if you have generated the IHT400 on the inheritance forms section, you will need to delete this. When you head back to the C1 this will have updated automatically and 'No' will now be ticked and subsequent fields completed.

I don't think the IHT400/schedules are rounding correctly? Should I detach to edit manually?

HMRC provides guidance on rounding on page 9 of their IHT400 form guidance notes.

With this in mind, there's no need to detach the form and correct the figures, the rounding guidance being followed is correct on the platform.

I don't think all my gift values are showing in my C1?

We will follow the guidance on the C1 notes which state to include "gifts within 7 years of the date of death, unless otherwise exempt".

  • Ensure all your gifts entered on the platform have 'date of gift' entered - if not they won't map into the C1
  • Check the year of your gifts and that you have selected 'Gifts within 7 years' option.
  • Check on the exemptions you have added onto the gifts

I've entered all liabilities required to show in box 80 of the IHT400 but not all are listed?

There's limited space on the IHT400 for any more than 10 liabilities that go into box 80.

Instead the system will turn that box into an editable field for you to enter the liabilities and then enter to total amount of all liabilities in the value field.

To list the remaining liabilities, these should go into the 'Additional information' towards the end of the IHT400.

I can't save the beneficiary/executor details on the platform?

We recommend checking the data below before saving:

  • If entering a contact number ensure there are no gaps and enter the telephone number as a whole
  • Check that there are no spaces at the start of end of any information entered
  • If entering bank details ensure you don't add the '-' between the sort code numbers

Why is the simple inheritance tax calculator blank?

The first thing to check would be if you have answered 'Yes' to any of boxes 48a, 48b, 109 or 110.

If you have answered yes, then this simple tax calculation area is not required and we therefore do not populate this area.

Secondly, if the total of any lifetime gifts is more than the Inheritance Tax nil rate band then this section shouldn't be filled out and therefore we do not populate this area.

We can't change the form logic to go against that but if you did want to see the simple tax calculation filled out even if any of these boxes are ticked yes, you'd can untick by clicking in the 'yes' box again, save and close and then reopen the IHT400. This will only work if that's the only reason the simple tax calculation isn't filled out and isn't because of the gift amount.
